About Freemasonry
Freemasonry, Masonry for short, is a society of gentlemen who uphold certain moral and spiritual values. It is often referred to as a fraternity that "makes good men better". Masons believe in brotherly love, relief and truth. Freemasonry's first Grand Lodge was founded in February 1717 in London. Its teachings offer refer to the building of King Solomon's Temple, and some believe its origins actually starts there. Today there are Lodges in every state in the United States and many countries all over the world.
Many people think Freemasonry is a secret society. Freemasonry Lodges are listed in the yellow pages, usually under Fraternities. Many Masons wear pins, rings, hats, have bumper stickers on their cars, or even have license plates with Masonic symbols. Lodge buildings are marked with the Square and Compass. Some Grand Lodges are even advertising on billboards or TV. For being a secret society, Masons have done a poor job at keeping secret. That being said, what goes on in the Lodge during closed meetings, stays in the Lodge.
Now if you are wondering what we do its pretty simple. We teach lessons of social and moral values based on the tools, language and symbols of ancient stone Masons. Some Masons concentrate on the many charities that Freemasonry supports. Others may be interested in learning the history or philosophy of the fraternity. Still others may be interested in the social aspect of it, getting in touch with old friends, or making new ones. When you join you have the option to do all the above.
